Description

We look forward to engaging with our fellow Rhodes Scholars from constituencies across Africa at the annual virtual get-together.

On Wednesday, 22 May 2024, SAARS will again be hosting a virtual alumni event. This event has proved popular as it enables us all to interact with a far greater number of our community residing across the globe, so do Save the Date.

We have a wonderful line-up of speakers on the programme: Jonny Steinberg (South Africa-at-Large & Balliol 1995) currently based at Yale University and a multi-award winning author, most recently of Winnie & Nelson: Portrait of a Marriage (2023), will deliver the keynote address, entitled: “Cecil John Rhodes In Love”. This will be followed by short talks by Carina Venter (South Africa-at-Large & Christ Church 2009), a senior lecturer at Stellenbosch University, whose research focuses on the areas of music and violence and critical disability studies; and by Scholars-in-Residence Jemma Houghton (Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) & Green Templeton 2021) and Mwangi Mwaura (Kenya & Christ Church 2023) on a great initiative to fund impact projects in Africa. The Warden, Elizabeth Kiss, will also join us to give an update on the latest Rhodes Trust news

We look forward to engaging with our fellow Scholars from constituencies across Africa. Sessions will be interactive, with Scholars having the time to engage with our speakers, as well as an opportunity to spend time in virtual break-out rooms catching up with old friends and making new connections.

Date: Wednesday, 22 May 2024

Time (SAST): 17:30 to 19:00 onwards ( for those enjoying catching up with fellow Scholars)
