Potential Differences
The people in your local community think and act in a way that is influenced by where they live, by their experiences, and by the society - micro and macro - in which they wield influence.
Your neighbours understand the community they are part of in a way that others, with their own perspectives and experiences, cannot. That disconnect can feed systemic bias. It can keep some perspectives expressed repetitively and others unheard.
For example, imagine others fail to recognise a particular community’s education system as robust. That doesn’t mean that community lacks people who approach local or international challenges in their own way, or that they aren’t a source of valid and valuable insight.
Regardless of others’ opinions, all places give rise to wisdom and compassion. When we take others’ perspectives and experiences into consideration, we benefit from their insights, and they benefit from ours.
If we fail to recognise the potential of people with different backgrounds, different perspectives and different cultures, those people - and the communities they represent - remain excluded from global conversations in which they should play an essential part.

Only the Rhodes Trust assesses and engages the world’s compassionate, innovative, and public-spirited leaders through local Scholarship selection committees spread across Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, and - with your support - Latin America as well.
These committees review applications from scholars in their geographies, selecting those who exemplify academic excellence, successful application of talent, and characteristics including honesty, empathy, kindness, and leadership.
Committees assess applicants’ personal statements and references, host social engagements for them, and hold final interviews.
They are the ones who make the decision about who from their communities should become a Rhodes Scholar—not someone serving on a central committee, who may be far removed from an individual applicant’s experience.
