For our October event, we are pleased to invite you to take part in a conversation with psychiatrist Carl Marci M.D.(Pennsylvania & St Catherine's 1991) , author of 'Rewired: Protecting Your Brain in the Digital Age'
In dialogue with Scholar in Residence Ali Daher (Jordan & Exeter 2020), amongst other topics Carl will discuss how modern mobile media, information and communications technologies that we euphemistically call “smartphones” are rewiring our brains making us less smart and more distracted, divided, and depressed. The good news? There is an emerging digital literacy and scientifically proven ways to protect our brains and improve our mental health.
We live in an age that is always on and everyone is always connected. But we feel more disconnected than ever. Why? Our brains are being rewired in fundamental ways by the supercomputers in our pockets with very real consequences to the physical and, more importantly, mental health of ourselves and our children. As we manage our way through the next phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more attention is focused on another epidemic – the one in mental health.
Dr Carl Marci (Pennsylvania & St Catherine's 1991) is a physician, scientist, entrepreneur, and author of the book, Rewired: Protecting Your Brain in the Digital Age. He is currently the Chief Psychiatrist and Managing Director of Mental Health and Neuroscience at OM1, a health technology and data company based in Boston, MA. He is a board-certified psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital and part-time Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
Previously, Dr. Marci was Chief Psychiatrist or Chief Medical Officer at a number of venture backed health and technology enabled companies and the co-founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Innerscope Research, a pioneer in the field of consumer neuroscience. Innerscope Research was a data science and media research firm acquired by Nielsen in 2015, where he served as the first Global Chief Neuroscientist until 2019.
Dr. Marci received his B.A. with honors from Columbia University, his M.A. from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and his M.D. with honors from Harvard Medical School. He completed two NIH fellowships in neuroscience and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed science journals, holds seven patents, gives lectures nationally and internationally.
He is also a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network as a 2014 Henry Crown Fellow.
Ali Daher (Jordan and Exeter 2020) is a third year DPhil student with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford. His primary interest lies in applying engineering analysis in a physiological context to better understand various biological phenomena. In particular, his work focuses on developing mathematical and computational models of cerebral blood flow, and applying such models to gain insight into how blood flow becomes compromised under pathological conditions such as stroke. Ali graduated from MIT in 2020 with a degree in mechanical and biological engineering and with a concentration in literature.
