David Williams FRSNZ (New Zealand & Balliol 1969) is a lawyer, professor, and former deputy dean of the University of Auckland's Faculty of Law. In 2023 he was appointed to the Waitangi Tribunal, a permanent commission of inquiry established in 1975 charged with investigating and making recommendations on claims brought by Māori relating to actions that breach the promises made in the Treaty of Waitangi.
In this talk, David reflects on the achievements of the commission after it marked its 50th anniversary in 2025, its continuing role, and how he came to be appointed to the commission.
