Laura Plata, from Palatine, Illinois, graduated from Yale University in 2019. Laura devoted her time as an undergraduate to defending migrants' rights, including founding the only campus organization dedicated to providing legal assistance to asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants. Her scholarship and policy work seeks to engage the link between the criminalization of Central American asylum seekers and a global trend toward closed borders.Laura is currently in Mexico City where she is conducting research on the impact of migration deterrence policies such as Migration Protection Protocols for individuals seeking asylum in the United States through the Institute for Women in Migration.
