Ryo Takamizawa

Biography

Ryo Takamizawa is completing his Doctor of Medicine at Griffith University, undertaking his clinical training across regional Queensland and northern New South Wales. He has a keen interest in how health systems can better support people living with chronic disease, with recent research spanning cardiovascular epidemiology, tobacco control and population health.

Ryo is particularly interested in what happens before a patient reaches hospital. His focus is on how primary care can help people living with chronic conditions remain independent and well. As Australia’s population ages, he hopes to investigate how funding models and stronger continuity with general practitioners can shift healthcare from responding to episodes of illness towards taking responsibility for people’s health over time. At Oxford, he hopes to pursue studies in health service improvement and evaluation, with the long-term goal of working as both a GP and health-systems strategist in Australia.

Alongside medicine, Ryo chairs the Board of the Australian Medical Students’ Association and serves as an elected member of Griffith University Council. He also founded Aurum Health Orchestra, which brings live music into hospitals, palliative-care services and aged-care homes. Ryo is also a pianist, cellist and conductor, and is particularly interested in how community and the arts can help people live well alongside illness.
