Biography
Michel is a Law School Graduate from the University of São Paulo currently studying a MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Oxford.
He is a Researcher, Legal Practitioner, Activist and Educator. As a researcher, he jointly coordinated the Prison Inspection Observatory: a student-led initiative to collect, systematise and analyse data on human rights violations in the prison system of the state of São Paulo. As a legal practitioner, he has worked extensively with the Public Defender's Office of the State of São Paulo on matters such as abortion and women's rights, as well as human rights surveillance in prisons and during sentence-serving. As an activist, he has participated in political organising for decarceration/decriminalisation with abolitionist movements of families of prisoners and victims of police brutality and state violence in São Paulo, such as "AMPARAR". As an educator, he has worked with the popular education initiative "Cursinho Popular Arcadas", helping socioeconomically vulnerable students get into university by lecturing on important topics (Critical Writing and Maths) for the Brazilian universities' entrance exams.
Michel intends to pursue a DPhil in Criminology at Oxford, investigating the racial hierarchies and systemic violence reproduced by prison systems and police practices in Brazil.
