Biography

Julie, a BSc (Hons) in Biology at the University of British Columbia, is dedicated to scientific research and communications that will help support a more sustainable world. She has made important discoveries about the distribution and decline of the Western Monarch butterfly and developed a cutting-edge machine learning model to protect their habitats. Her thesis investigating how the eating habits of shore crabs are being affected by temperature will help advance understanding of the resiliency of marine ecosystems and the impacts of climate change. She spent three months at field school in Haida Gwaii, learning about Indigenous governance and coastal ecosystems, and plans to apply the knowledge she gained there in her future work. Julie trained at Canada’s national ballet school and loves cooking, fostering community, and adventuring outdoors. She aspires to forge the connections and collaborations that will make it possible for science to more effectively serve society and the planet, protecting its rich and beautiful biodiversity.
