Luke McCarvill

Biography

Luke has completed a BSc in Sustainable Design Engineering from the University of Prince Edward Island, specializing in mechatronics and sustainable energy solutions. For his capstone project, his team developed a smart waste bin that uses machine vision to inform users of their domestic waste and inspire them to change their purchasing and disposal habits. Luke has also worked as a researcher on various R&D projects, including the design of heat pumps for electric vehicles, testing pouch-cell lithium-ion batteries, and creating all-weather lithium-ion battery packs for off-grid applications.

An avid Ultimate (‘Frisbee’) player, Luke played for the Arizona State University men's team during a study abroad, founded the UPEI Ultimate team, and led this new squad to the Canadian Atlantics and Nationals. He now plays with the Oxford University team. Luke previously trained as a Marine Technician in the Royal Canadian Navy (Reserves) and aspires to work in energy and environmental policy. He is currently completing an MSc in Environmental Change and Management, where his dissertation research focuses on modelling power network failure in extreme heat. Luke will begin a DPhil in Interdisciplinary Life and Environmental Science in autumn 2025.
