Biography
Frances is an artist and broadcaster from Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington.
She graduated in 2024 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Te Waka Tūhura, Elam School of Fine Arts, and a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Media Studies from Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland. Her practice and research are concerned with the avenues art offers for reconciling troubling histories and imagining hope-filled futures. During her undergraduate studies, Frances founded and hosted ‘Various Artists,’ the arts hour on New Zealand’s largest independent radio station, 95bFM. She also established and served as president of the Fine Arts Students’ Association at Elam.
In 2024–25, Frances completed an MSt in History of Art and Visual Culture at the University of Oxford and will pursue an MSc in Visual, Material, and Museum Anthropology in 2025–26. She is the recipient of the 2025 Lincoln College Visiting Fellowship at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, and works with Contemporary HUM, a digital hub supporting the international projects of New Zealand creative practitioners.
Frances is also a keen musician, hiker, and gardener.
