Biography

Jonathan Oates of Knoxville, Tennessee, is a senior at Yale studying political science with interests in democratic theory and political reform. His thesis explores the relationship between democracy, equality, and dynamics of exclusion in Tocqueville's Democracy in America. At Yale, he has participated in the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy. Jonathan values active involvement in student life, having served as a Yale College Council senator and member of the executive board, co-president of the Silliman Activities & Administrative Committee, and now as Head First-Year Counselor in Silliman College. He has completed internships at nonprofit research organizations ThinkTennessee and the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy as well as the United States Capitol. He is also a proud alumnus of the Institute for Responsible Citizenship. At Oxford, Jonathan intends to continue his studies in politics.
