Nicholas Hayes

Biography

Nicholas Hayes earned a BS in Mathematics and a BA in German from the University of Alabama. He is a Boren Scholar (Swahili), Hollings Scholar, and the recipient of his university's Most Outstanding Student award during his junior year. He speaks English, Swahili, and German, and has studied Modern Greek, Mandarin, and Dutch. Nick works at the intersection of computational sciences, linguistics, artificial intelligence, and international affairs. He has published and presented research in corpus linguistics and passive acoustics. Nick has interned with the US Department of State, Protagonist, the Center for Advanced Defense Studies, and NOAA. He is an avid endurance athlete, and enjoys ultramarathons and mountaineering. A data scientist by training, Nick aspires to leverage speech and language processing technologies for under-resourced languages.
