Tolu Awoyemi

Biography

Toluwalase Awoyemi is a Cardiovascular Disease Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he trains at the intersection of advanced heart failure, cardio-oncology, and cardiovascular imaging. A clinician-innovator, his research spans four interconnected domains: cardio-obstetrics and maternal cardiovascular health, cardiovascular health disparities, heart failure outcomes and implementation science, and the application of artificial intelligence to cardiovascular care. He holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford, where his doctoral work at the Nuffield Department of Women's and Reproductive Health produced a comprehensive multi-omics characterisation of placental extracellular vesicles in preeclampsia. He completed his medical degree with distinction at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and his internal medicine residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he received the Dale Abel Award for exceptional mentorship, clinical skill, and research.

Toluwalase's work is animated by a conviction that cardiovascular medicine has not yet served all populations equally, and that closing that gap demands both scientific rigour and the willingness to redesign the systems through which care is delivered. He is also a committed builder beyond the clinic: he co-founded The Ganglion Initiative, an educational mentorship organisation that has reached over 8,000 students across Nigeria, and serves as a committee member of the MGB Society of Fellows at Mass General Brigham. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the American Board of Internal Medicine certified in internal medicine.
