Jasmine Brown

Biography

Originally from New Jersey, Jasmine Brown, MD, MPhil, is an ophthalmology resident at Stanford University. Dr. Brown’s journey to ophthalmology began in high school when she became interested in neuroscience. While in college at Washington University in St. Louis, she further explored that passion, earning her bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience. At Oxford, she completed a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in History of Science, Medicine and Technology. Her master's dissertation became the groundwork for her book, TWICE AS HARD: The Stories of Black Women Who Fought to Become Physicians from the Civil War to the 21st Century (website: jasminebrownauthor.com), which she wrote while in medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine. When my book was published by Beacon Press, it received national acclaim and was highlighted by various professional organizations, including the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association (AMA), as well as media outlets including NPR, TIME Magazine and 6abc News. It was her childhood dream to help increase the number of underrepresented minorities in science and medicine. Through her debut book and outreach efforts, she plans to do just that.
