Biography

Dr. Sonali Chowdhry is a trade economist based at the German Institute for Economic Research and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. Her work investigates how shocks propagate through global supply chains with high frequency customs data. Findings from her ongoing research on geopolitical disruptions to trade and global shipping networks have been extensively reported by leading news outlets including Bloomberg, Reuters, Al Jazeera, Die Zeit and The Hindu. Previously, Sonali was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Harvard Growth Lab and a Max Weber Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies in Florence. In addition to academic research, she has served as an external consultant on trade issues for multiple government agencies including the European Parliament's Committee on International Trade (INTA). Sonali earned her PhD in Economics from LMU Munich as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow and read for the MPhil in Economics at the University of Oxford. She currently teaches International Economics at the Hertie School and lives between Berlin and New Delhi.
