Biography

Alexander F. Coccia, Columbus, Ohio, graduated from the University of Notre Dame in May. He majored in Africana Studies and Peace Studies. A Truman Scholar, he won many awards for scholarship and leadership. Alex is now a Truman-Albright Fellow in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. At Notre Dame, he was the student body president. His platform focused on promoting the passions and interests of all students, including those who felt marginalized. He successfully led the amendment of the student union nondiscrimination clause to include gender identify, disability and documentation status. He also founded a student movement to create a more welcoming environment for students who identify as LGBTQ and their allies. He was also a member of the varsity fencing team, which won the 2011 National Championship.
