Biography

I am a South African Rhodes Scholar (2005) and Associate Professor in Historical Studies at the University of Cape Town. As a student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, I became very active in the HIV treatment access movement and developed an abiding interest in global health equity, human rights and social justice (including in the areas of gender and sexuality). My widely cited book "South African AIDS Activism and Global Health Politics" (2013) was based upon my Oxford DPhil thesis. I have recently published on AIDS and global health policy and activism, race and medical humanitarianism and mixed methods in writing women's and LGBTIQ history. I remain committed to public engagement and am passionate about the role scholarship can play in effecting social change.
