Jasmine is a 2018 Rhodes Scholar, a 4th year medical student at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of TWICE AS HARD: The Stories of Black Women Who Fought to Become Physicians from the Civil War to the 21st Century. Her book has been featured on multiple TV shows and on NPR. It’s also been highlighted in various publications including The Philadelphia Inquirer and TIME Magazine. Jasmine has spoken at universities and organizations across the country and at multiple national conferences. She is committed to using her skills and platform to help create a more diverse and inclusive medical community.
Leighton (they/them) is a first-year Canadian Rhodes Scholar, pursuing an MSc in Medical Anthropology. They have an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and completed the first two years of medical school at the University of Toronto before coming to Oxford. Leighton is a writer, poet, and critically mad queer activist whose work has been featured in some of the world’s leading medical and literary journals. Their writing often explores themes of gender, sexuality, mental health and the human condition as they strive to unsettle norms and critically engage with the world around them. Leighton is passionate about recentering the fundamental role that story plays in healthcare and caregiving, and about using narrative as a powerful tool to foster healing and human connection.
Nicole is a doctoral candidate through the DPhil in Translational Health Sciences. Her DPhil is funded through the joint support of the Rhodes Scholarship and Clarendon Scholarship. Prior to Oxford, Nicole was a medical student at the University of Toronto. Nicole’s research interests lie at the intersection of health equity, technology and healthcare. Specifically, she is interested in the use of virtual and remote technology in primary care settings and the role of policy in shaping patient and staff experiences.
