A History of Change

The Rhodes Scholarship is the world’s oldest and most pre-eminent postgraduate international scholarship programme. Rhodes Scholars are chosen for their academic excellence, their devotion to serving others and their qualities of leadership in thought and action.

Intensely competitive, the Rhodes Scholarship is solely merit-based, selecting over 100 young graduate students each year from 25 constituencies which span the globe. Once selected, Rhodes Scholars are given full funding and support for them to continue their studies at Oxford University, usually for two years.

Since its foundation, the Rhodes Scholarship has grown and changed. The work of Rhodes Scholars themselves has been a vital force in bringing greater diversity and inclusion, and they have been joined by others who have made powerful contributions in building our global community of changemakers. Find out more below about how the Scholarship has opened up across its history, and how it continues to do so today.
