The Rhodes Trust recognises extraordinary volunteer service each year through the George Parkin Service Awards. The community has benefitted greatly from the volunteer service of the following members and others:
Nicholas W. Allard (New York & Merton 1974)
Nick has been a steadfast supporter of the Rhodes community for decades. He’s served as an American Selector for 16 years, including 12 as Secretary, and dedicated 19 years to the American Rhodes Scholars (AARS) Board, with 11 as Secretary. Since 1988, Nick has also served as The American Oxonian Class Secretary. He contributes to the Rhodes Global Alumni Advisory Group, Selection Committees, and helps increase class engagement. Nick actively participates in events, including speaking at the 120th reunion.
T.A. Barron (Colorado & Balliol 1974)
T.A. Barron has served on numerous Scholar Selection Committees and is the visionary behind the Rhodes Patagonia program; providing life-changing experiences for Scholars across disciplines, nationalities and backgrounds. His mentorship and Fireside Chats are legendary. Recently, he offered his perspective as an award-winning storyteller to advise on AI tools in applications. As one nominator wrote: "I have never met anyone so completely committed to, and energised by, helping young people learn and grow."
Elliot Gerson (Connecticut & Magdalen 1974)
Elliot completed a remarkable 28-year term as American Secretary in 2023, and for 15 years previously as a Selector, State Secretary and Assistant National Secretary. He has also served on the Scholarship Committee, as chief judge (and one of the architects) of the Äänit Prize, and as a Class Leader and speaker at Rhodes House. A dedicated mentor, Elliot has profoundly impacted many Rhodes Scholars. One nominator stated, “He has changed and shaped countless lives for the better”.
Renee Lee (Malaysia & Wolfson 2003)
As the inaugural Rhodes Outreach Ambassador for Malaysia, Professor Lee has shown exceptional leadership and dedication in promoting the Rhodes Scholarship. Her efforts have greatly increased public awareness and enhanced the reputation of the Scholarship; reaching candidates from diverse backgrounds and institutions. Renee has also played a key role in mentoring new ambassadors and implementing innovative strategies to expand the programme.
Muloongo Muchelemba (Zambia & Harris Manchester 2002)
Formerly Zambia's National Secretary, Muloongo now serves as National Secretary for the Global Scholarship; embarking on the Trust's first trip to Latin America. She co-chairs ‘The Trust and Africa in the 21st Century’ Advisory Group, and serves on the Rhodes Trust’s Art Committee. Her passion and drive, especially as a mentor to young people from the Global South, are evident in every project she undertakes.
Alison van Rooy (Manitoba & Lincoln 1990)
Alison has served with energy and distinction on the Trust’s Advisory Group on ‘Engaging Our History’, stepping up as co-chair after Eusebius McKaiser's passing. She has facilitated complex discussions on Legacy, Equity and Inclusion with skill, wisdom and calm guidance. Since 2013 she has been a dedicated Class Leader, hosting several reunions, and has provided valuable feedback as an inaugural member of the Oxford Next Horizons Programme.
