Scholars' Library - the first 50

Monday 17 August, 2026

Last week saw the 50th edition of our Scholars’ Library series. Started in March 2022, each month we host an author from the Rhodes Scholar community to talk about their latest literary work. Georgie Thurston, who created the series recalls:

“It was after COVID, we'd got the hang of doing virtual events. We were coming out into a time of more physical and hybrid events, but we wanted to still capitalize on the fact the community is so global. One of the things that so many Rhodes Scholars have in common is that they've written a book, and the diversity of the topics they've written about is so great that the Scholars' Library series allows us cover lots of different topics under the same umbrella.”

SL50

Georgie sat down with Sam O’Sullivan and Chishimba Kasanga, two Scholars who have moderated 7 of the 50 sessions between them, and Richard Hughes, the Trust’s Online Community Manager, to reflect on the highlights from the series so far, and look ahead to what we’d like to see in the next 50.

The first 50 events in the series have featured poetry, fiction, history science and the environment, politics, social justice, and memoirs. Watch the discussion, and explore the library through our interactive graphic of the first 50 events.
