Michael Petrus

Biography

Michael Petrus is a medical doctor pursuing a DPhil (PhD) in Medical Sciences (Cardiovascular Science) at the University of Oxford with the Antoniades Group. His research integrates multi-omics, radiotranscriptomics, and deep learning applied to large-scale CT imaging to develop AI-driven precision diagnostics for heart disease.

He graduated as the top MBChB student at the University of Namibia with 21 distinctions and completed a Master’s in Development Policy and Practice at the University of Cape Town as a Mandela Rhodes Scholar. Committed to advancing healthcare in Africa, he founded the Namibian Student Surgical Society and serves as a Director on the International Association of Student Surgical Societies Executive Committee. His earlier research explored community-based strategies to improve diabetic care in rural Namibia.

Michael has represented Namibia internationally as a Future Surgeon Delegate at the World Congress of Surgery in Malaysia and previously served as Junior Mayor of Windhoek. Beyond medicine, he is also a professional photographer with work published by Agence France-Presse.
