Vakadivilivili mats are special because they are unique to my island of Batiki in the Lomaiviti Province of Fiji. Vakadivilivili were originally made for chiefly and traditional events. These mats are celebrated for their high contrast geometric patterns. The method of weaving these mats is protected by people from Batiki. It is usually only made by women from Batiki, however Batiki women who have moved away weave vakadivilivili mats in their new homes. The intricate weaving methods are passed from women to their nieces, daughters and granddaughters with each new generation. It is a testament of the essential role that women play in preserving our culture. I learned what I know of the vakadivilivili from my aunt, Adi Asenaca Caucau. It is customary for women from Batiki to wear these mats on special occasions such as their wedding day. Vakadivilivili mats are my favorite mats because they belong to the rich history and heritage of my beautiful island.
