Rhodes Trust announces new global art residency programme

The Rhodes Trust has launched its inaugural Rhodes Art for Global Impact Residency, an initiative that aims to harness the power of art to address pressing global issues and promote social justice.

The residency will provide one artist with the opportunity to engage with the Rhodes Trust community for a year, fostering collaboration and intellectual exchange.

Applications for the residency are now open to the public for the 2024-2025 cycle. Entrants can submit work from any medium, including paintings, sculpture, drawings, textile, digital prints, or photography.

The selected artist-in-residence will participate in a six-month intellectual exchange period from January to June 2025, which includes two visits to Rhodes House in Oxford, culminating in an exhibition of their work.

The artist will receive a £15,000 stipend and up to £3,000 for travel and materials. The Rhodes Trust will also provide accommodation for the artist’s two visits to the UK.

Each year, applicants to the residency will be asked to submit proposals that respond to a theme. For its opening year, the theme is "Radical Joy."

The artist-in-residence will be chosen by a selection committee, which consists of distinguished artists, scholars, and art world professionals, including London-based artist and member of the Royal Academy Rana Begum and Rhodes Scholar and gallerist Julie Taylor (Zimbabwe & St Antony’s 2003). The Selectors will be looking for a high-quality, self-directing practitioner who will use this new opportunity to best develop their practice.

Elizabeth Kiss, CEO of the Rhodes Trust, commented:

"The Rhodes Art for Global Impact Residency represents an exciting new chapter in the Rhodes Trust's commitment to fostering diverse perspectives and innovative approaches to global challenges. We look forward to receiving applications and seeing how the chosen artist will contribute to, and be inspired by, our community of changemakers."

Lizzie Collins, Chair of the Rhodes Art for Global Impact Residency selection committee, Strategic Art Consultant to the Rhodes Trust, and Founder of Atelier Zuleika, said:

“This residency is a wonderful opportunity for an artist to join the dynamic global and interdisciplinary community of the Rhodes Trust. I am delighted to see how the Arts are being centred and valued by the Trust and look forward to the creative proposals to our inaugural theme of ‘Radical Joy’.

Future selection cycles will alternate annually between public applications and those from the global community of Rhodes Scholars and Fellows from partnership programmes.

Other key details of the residency include:

  • A six-month intellectual exchange period from January to June 2025
  • An exhibition of new or in-progress work at Rhodes House from September 2025 to August 2026
  • Opportunities to engage with Rhodes Scholars and the wider community

Applications are now open until 16 October 2024. For more information and to apply, visit: https://artopps.co.uk/opportunities/rhodesartresidency2024.

Applicants must submit a proposal which is the artist’s unaided work. All applicants must be able to travel to the UK for the residency; the Rhodes Trust will not be able to support visa applications.
