Biography

While at the University of Cape Town, Raphael undertook original research for his thesis on the history of the platinum industry in South Africa, and its role in the police massacre of thirty four striking miners at Marikana in 2012. Some of his historical work has been published, and he is working on publishing his groundbreaking Marikana thesis. Raphael has also been involved in social justice projects and youth development for over six years in South Africa. He has been a tutor and youth mentor in Cape Town's underdeveloped townships through progressive NGO Equal Education. He has recently been the national deputy head of progressive global Jewish youth movement called Habonim, in which he has fostered numerous critical debates about Judaism and Israel, and the local Jewish communities' responsibilities towards South Africa. He has extensive skills in publishing and infographics. He has been a tutor in Maths and History at UCT and is currently a university tutor and youth development activist in Cape Town.
