Biography

Aly Kassam−Remtulla is a globally-minded leader with a profound commitment to education, philanthropy, and environmental and social justice. He is a non-profit executive with over 20 years of experience in leadership, planning, governance, and operations in complex organizations. As Princeton University’s Vice Provost for International Affairs, Aly leads a high-performing team of 250 professionals working across three continents to advance international engagement, support international students and scholars, and manage the university’s global footprint. His portfolio includes oversight of the 48,000-acre Mpala research campus in Kenya, one of the leading ecological institutes on the African continent. Aly is also a co-founder and co-chair of the Faculty Advancement Network, a national consortium of universities advancing greater diversity in the American professoriate. He is an active teacher, advisor, and mentor to undergraduate and graduate students. Before Princeton, he worked at the MacArthur Foundation, for an investment bank, on two political campaigns, and as a consultant to non−profit organizations and a start−up company. Aly chairs the board of trustees of the United World College-USA and is the first alumnus and first person of color to hold this role. He also serves on the boards of Allegheny College, Princeton in Africa, and Princeton in Beijing; is a consultant to the Luce Foundation; and on the Presidential Leadership Council of Search for Common Ground. Previously, he served on the boards of the National ACLU, the Stanford Alumni Association, and the Oxford University Alumni. Born in Kenya and raised in Canada, Aly graduated from Stanford University with honors and with distinction. He received an MSc, MBA, and PhD from Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. He is a published poet and retired food blogger. His commentary has appeared in WIRED Magazine, the Chicago Tribune, Al Jazeera, and the Philadelphia Inquirer. In 2022, he was inducted into Stanford University’s Multicultural Alumni Hall of Fame.
