Simon Mendelsohn

Biography

Simon graduated from the University of Cape Town medical school in 2011 with first class honours and is currently completing his medical internship in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. At university, Simon worked for six years with the Students' Health And Welfare Centres Organisation. He was primarily involved in organising free mobile primary healthcare clinics, staffed by volunteer students and doctors, providing care to over five-thousand patients per annum in underserved communities. Simon was recognised for his work with the university's premier award for student leadership and community service: the Vice-Chancellor's Student Leader Award. His previous research has explored the role of situated learning - learning outside the classroom - in medical education. In his spare time, Simon enjoys rambling through the outdoors, running up mountains, and exploring South Africa's diverse cultural and natural landscapes. He intends to pursue a career in public healthcare management and policy, with a focus on equality and access to care in poor and underserved communities in Southern Africa.
