Please join us this year in celebrating the month of Ramadan at Rhodes House
This event is for Rhodes Scholars only. Scholars - as this event is catered and there will be a £13.00 contribution required from you, please ensure you sign-up by midday on Friday 10th May 2019 in order to attend.
3rd Week (Trinity term)
Friday 17th May
Experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of Ramadan during the 2nd Ramadan Iftar at Rhodes House!
Ramadan is a month of the Muslim calendar in which Muslims fast from food and water from sunrise to sunset. It is an exercise in self-control, gratitude, and empathy with those who go hungry every day. At sunset, friends and family gather to break their fast in a shared meal called iftar. The meals are a lively occasion to celebrate the blessings of food, family, and community.
We invite all Scholars to try fasting for the day (consuming nothing between 3:21am-8:57pm on 17th May). At 8:00pm the Rhodes House event will begin with brief reflections on Ramadan, musical performances, poems and prayers from Muslim cultures. A catered dinner will take place after 8:57-9:30pm with food served from Antep Kitchen, a local Turkish restaurant in Oxford. We kindly request a £13.00 contribution per Scholar to cover costs.
Please note we regrettably are unable to extend the invitation to partners or out of town guests until the RSVP deadline, however all Rhodes Scholars are invited to sign-up here now (and before Friday 10th May).
For any questions about the event (or for tips on how to survive fasting for the day), please e-mail Hassaan Shahawy (California & Pembroke, 2016).
