The acclaimed cellist Raphaela Gromes and her piano partner Julian Riem will be performing at Rhodes House on Friday, April 12, at 5:30pm. The duo will play the program of their Ireland tour, which features works by Rossini, Volans, and Martinu. The recital is co-hosted by German Rhodes Scholars and the Oxford German Society and will be free of charge for scholars and students; pre-registration is required.
About the Artists:
The 28-year-old Raphaela Gromes has been celebrated by the press as one of the greatest cellists of her generation. A SONY Classical exclusive artist, she has given the world premiere of three cello concertos dedicated to her by contemporary composers. Raphaela is a graduate of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich, where she studied under Wen-Sinn Yang as a fellow of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation. She has taken master classes with cellists such as Yo-Yo Ma, David Geringas, Natalia Gutman, and Daniel Müller-Schott. Raphaela plays a Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume instrument of 1855.
Julian Riem is a renowned soloist and multi-award-winning pianist who performs regularly in Europe, Japan, and the United States. A sought-after chamber musician, he has recorded three albums with his longtime duo partner Raphaela Gromes, most recently Hommage á Rossini (SONY 2018).
