Life as a Rhodes Scholar in Oxford is a busy, enriching, and often transformative, experience. Here is a flavour of what the current Scholars get involved in during their time.
Character, Service and Leadership Programme
The Rhodes Service and Leadership programme is for Rhodes Scholars at Oxford. It has as its objectives to encourage Scholars to develop a lifelong commitment to lead and serve others, whatever their chosen field. In addition, it seeks to equip Scholars with the practical skills and tools to craft a life of risk-taking, impact and passion. The programme includes:
First Year Retreat: Service & Leadership
Second Year Retreat: Building the Good Life: Purpose, Meaning and Balance
Skills workshop sessions
Weekly discussions on global challenges
Activities at Oxford
Rhodes Scholars are women and men drawn from diverse backgrounds in many countries. They are leaders in extra-curricular activities, committed to promoting the public good. In Oxford, as well as focusing on their studies and related academic and professional activities, Rhodes Scholars are active in their colleges, departments, University clubs and societies, and their local, national, and international communities. Many take part in sporting, musical, theatrical, political, religious, and other activities. They are also deeply engaged in community service activities in Oxford and around the world, and the advocacy of causes they believe important for the world’s future.
Every Rhodes Scholar attends their Coming Up and Going Down Dinners - a key part of the Rhodes experience. At this year's Going Down Dinner, Sarah Westwood (South African College School, Newlands & Linacre 2015) and Mayanka Mukherji (India & St Cross 2015) and Alex Coccia (Indiana & St John's 2015) offered their reflections on their experience and time at Oxford.
Rhodes Experience Reflections
In June 2015, Rhodes Scholars shared their reflections on the Rhodes Scholarship in a competition to speak about their experience at the Going Down and Benefactors' Dinners of 2015. You can see some of their speeches below, and more on the Rhodes Trust YouTube channel.
