Hamish Tomlinson

Biography

Hamish is completing a Bachelor of Engineering, with Honours in Mechanical Engineering. Alongside his studies he works as a Teachers' Assistant, tutoring and grading first year papers, and mentors university peers in his halls of residence. Earlier this year Hamish was granted the Beca Engineering in Society Award for academic performance, leadership potential and contributions to the university and society. He is also the University of Canterbury Engineering Society Faculty Representative holding weekly tutorials, organising events and managing the engineering design challenge. Hamish represented New Zealand in track-cycling throughout his school career, culminating in 2009 when his team broke the New Zealand record, being placed 4th in the Junior World Championships. Hamish put aside his chances of a professional cycling career, in favour of tertiary education. However, he still cycles competitively and successfully on the National Track. He plays hockey for the University, and enjoys skiing, both on water and snow. In the long-term, Hamish wishes to pursue a career of service in the healthcare sector, through engineering and science.
