Six Rhodes women swim English channel for Pakistan charity
Six Rhodes women have successfully swum non-stop as a relay team across the English Channel, raising funds for the Acid Survivors Foundation in Pakistan.
Amanda Gilbertson (New Zealand & Magdalen 2008), Nina Hall (New Zealand & St Antony's 2009), Anthea Lindquist (Victoria & Green Templeton 2009), Mari Rabie (South Africa-at-Large & St Catherine's 2010), Natasha Simonsen (New South Wales & Magdalen 2009), and Ginger Turner (Texas & St John's 2007) completed the charity swim unaided in an impressive 12 hours, 59 minutes.
The team had to cover 21 miles (34 km) of choppy waters at low temperatures, whilst navigating schools of jellyfish and tankers using two of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
The team were sponsored by fellow Rhodes Scholar and Trustee Michael McCaffery (Pennsylvania & Merton 1975), and raised a remarkable £11,145 for the Acid Survivors Foundation in Pakistan. This sum of money will enable 22 victims of acid attacks to receive surgery and psycho-social care.
