Rhodes alumni and friends
The global Rhodes community - embracing Rhodes alumni, current Scholars and Scholars-elect, and many friends of the Scholarships around the world - is international, inter-generational, and interdisciplinary.
There are over 4,400 living Rhodes Scholars residing in more than fifty countries around the world. All Rhodes Scholars are listed here. The Rhodes Trust warmly welcomes the participation and support of other friends of the Rhodes Scholarships.
Rhodes alumni serve their professions, their communities, their countries, and the global community in varied and significant ways. This is reflected on this website in, for example, Rhodes Scholar News and the Rhodes Scholar of the Week feature, as well as pages about recent appointments of Rhodes Scholars and recent books by Scholars, and tributes on their passing.
Rhodes alumni associations are active in many constituencies.
Diverse Rhodes alumni - from among the global community of Scholars - reflect on their experiences as Rhodes Scholars here.
Rhodes alumni and friends also participate actively in supporting the Rhodes Scholarships in a variety of ways:
- Participation in Rhodes alumni associations and foundations
- Taking part in alumni events - such as during the University of Oxford Alumni Weekend in Oxford each September (to get a taste of these, click here and here)
- Encouraging outstanding young people to consider applying for the Rhodes Scholarship
- Serving on selection committees and as regional and national secretaries
- Informal mentoring of younger Rhodes Scholars
- Participation in Rhodes community strategic dialogue and, in 2009-10, in the Rhodes community consultation on governance
- Participation in the governance of the Rhodes Trust as Trustees and as members of Trustee committees (Scholarship Committee, Finance and Investment Committee, Governance Committee, Development Committee for the Rhodes Scholarships) and on taskforces (such as the current taskforce on Rhodes online presence and community) to advise the Warden and Trustees; and through
- Supplementing the bequest of Cecil Rhodes with their own financial contributions (major gifts, annual giving, and bequests) in support of the Scholarships.
Rhodes House is committed to supporting the global Rhodes community to promote life-long Scholar engagement and connectivity, and to support the Scholarships. Events to meet with the Warden of Rhodes House are being held over time in all Rhodes countries, and Rhodes alumni associations in several countries also organise events. Images from some recent alumni events are included in the 'Glimpses of Rhodes' video.
Regular communication with Rhodes alumni and friends is through, for example, Rhodes e-News and the Warden's Christmas letter.
