The 32 Rhodes Scholars from the United States who will join the 83-strong Rhodes class of 2012 from around the world in Oxford next year have been elected, with Scholars-elect from two US colleges that have never before had a Rhodes Scholar, and with more women than men selected as Rhodes Scholars.
In the US, two Rhodes Scholars are elected in each of 16 districts around the country, with selection committees meeting in separate cities on Friday and Saturday, 18 and 19 November.
210 candidates from 99 different colleges were interviewed, including 15 from colleges that had never before had a Rhodes Scholar. In announcing the names of the Scholars-elect chosen by selection committees, the US National Secretary to the Rhodes Trust, Mr Elliot Gerson, said that the Trust was pleased to announce first-time winners from Bard College and from California State University, Long Beach.
For the fourth time since 1976, more women (17) than men (15) have been elected in the US. Rhodes Scholars are chosen without regard to gender.
So far this year, around the world 29 women and 26 men have been chosen by selection committees as Rhodes Scholars-elect. Elections in other countries will conclude in mid-December.
