The 2016 CRSF Scholar is Prashant Pandey. He writes:
"I am delighted to have been chosen as the 2016 scholar for the Canadian Rhodes Scholars Foundation Scholarship. Having completed an undergraduate Masters in Engineering Science at Oxford University, I am excited to be embarking on a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver. I am very grateful that the CRSF will be supporting me through this transition and journey in one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
My research will be concerned with computer assisted surgery. In particular, I will be developing a real-time ultrasound imaging system that will be used to guide surgeons during orthopaedic surgery. Current imaging techniques use ionising radiation, which is harmful to patients and so cannot be used for long periods of time. Ultrasound offers a safer and less invasive option which can be coupled with machine learning techniques to provide invaluable details which may not be observable by the surgeons.
At UBC, I will be working in collaboration with two laboratories and some of the most knowledgeable engineers and scientists in the field. With the support of this scholarship, I hope to contribute to the progress of biomedical engineering and to develop innovative solutions for patients and medical staff."
